Time to learn about Sunflowers!


The Sunflower:

Sunflowers have a beautiful hue of yellow. In order to grow sunflowers there are just a few things necessary to know!

Facts:

  1. Sunflowers can grow from three to even eighteen feet tall.
  2. In full bloom the sunflower head can grow to become 12 inches in diameter.
  3. Sunflowers scientific name is Helianthus annuus
  4. This is greek were helios means sun and anthos means flower.
  5. Sunflowers are heliotropic, which means that they turn their flowers to follow the movement of the Sun across the sky east to west, and then returns at night to face the east, ready again for the morning sun.

How to take care(steps):

  1. They need to be watered every couple days in hot and dry coniditiond, summer preferably.
  2. It is important to keep the soil moist.
  3. It is good to give them copious amounts of water because it will keep them healthy and strong.
  4. By being consistant and atentive to having moist and hydrated soil growing should only take about three months!
  5. Sunflowers are heavy feeders, so the soil needs to be nutrient-rich with organic matter or composted (aged) manure. Or, work in a slow release granular fertilizer 8 inches deep into your soil.
  6. Find a sunny spot! Sunflowers grow best in locations with direct sunlight.
